  • Light Princess And Other Stories

    $21.99

The fact that George MacDonald–a scholar as well as a preacher and writer–once read this fairy tale to his students instead of giving them a lecture says volumes about the man and his beliefs. It also says much about his faith in the power of stories. The Light Princess is a simple enough tale, clearly written for children–a princess at her christening is cursed by a wicked witch with lightness (she floats blissfully about the castle all day long, and gets into all sorts of adventures, as one can easily imagine)–yet it holds a powerful spiritual truth. Gravity, weight, sorrow, suffering–all of this the princess misses, but with all of these she misses love, for what is love without weight, without body? What is love without falling? She discovers this truth, of course, only at the last minute when a faithful prince loves her enough to die for her.
Sometimes it’s not a ponderous lecture–or sermon–that we need in order to experience what incarnation is about.

    $19.99

An exploration of the great conflict going on between good and evil within the spiritual realm, Dr. Barnhouse carefully traces this vast spiritual conflict back to the period before the beginning of recorded time. Step by step, he then follows its unfolding to the final battle at the end of time. Here are answers to questions that have long troubled thinking people–concerning the trials, sufferings, and difficulties of life–with added helpful suggestions for facing life’s obstacles. Dr. Herbert Henry Ehrenstein says, “I am certain that this book will take its place as one of the greatest Dr. Barnhouse wrote during his lifetime, unfolding as it does an entirely new area of biblical truth for many readers who have never before contemplated this invisible battle involving God, Satan, angels, demons, and mankind. Indeed, I know of no other available book of so complex a subject.”

Christendom, according to Malcolm Muggeridge, is something quite different than Christianity. Joni Eareckson Tada is one of today’s great Christian women, and “A Step Further,” which grew out of her own pilgrimage as a disabled person, is one of the great Christian books of our time. Written in the simple, friendly, exuberant, down-to-earth style that is special to Joni, it is a tremendous tonic for Christians living in pain and frustration, and it unfolds some neglected aspects of the wisdom of God superbly. This is heart-to-heart writing at its best.

We have all waded through the verbal swamp of syrupy cliches as some sufferers overspiritualize their pain. We have also felt the hot breath of bitterness from those who refuse to accept and adjust to their disability. Joni represents neither extreme. In her book there is a beautiful balance between tough-minded reality and scripturally based theology.

Through her public example, Joni Eareckson Tada has done more to straighten out warped views of suffering than all of the theologians put together. Her life is a triumph of healing-a healing of the spirit, the most difficult kind. When she speaks about the problem of pain, we should all sit up and take notice.”

  • Paddle To The Sea (Anniversary)

    $13.99

In the Nipigon country north of the Great Lakes a young boy carved the figure of an Indian in a canoe, christened him Paddle-to-the-Sea, and set him on a melting snow bank which the spring sun was truning into a tumbling mountain stream. Then Paddle began a journey that took him hundreds of miles from his birthplace. He escaped the jaws of a hungry sawmill and went on to see many things on his long trip through the Great Lakes and down the Saint Lawrence River–wild animals fleeing a forest fire, the wreck of a steamer caught in an icy winter storm on Lake Superior, loading and unloading at busy docks, the peacful farms bordering the Saint Lawrence. He took a dizzy plunge over Niagara Falls and managed by a miracle to survive the whirlpools. He was buffeted by many winds and currents and was helped on his way by human hands, until, at last, he reached the Atlantic and earned the right to be called a true Paddle-to-the-Sea. Recommended for ages 8 to 12. A 1942 Caldecott Honor book.

  • Wounded Healer : Ministry In Contemporary Society

    $17.00

The Wounded Healer is a hope-filled and profoundly simple book that speaks directly to those men and women who want to be of service in their church or community, but have found the traditional ways often threatening and ineffective. In this book, Henri Nouwen combines creative case studies of ministry with stories from diverse cultures and religious traditions in preparing a new model for ministry. Weaving keen cultural analysis with his psychological and religious insights, Nouwen has come up with a balanced and creative theology of service that begins with the realization of fundamental woundedness in human nature. Emphasizing that which is in humanity common to both minister and believer, this woundedness can serve as a source of strength and healing when counseling others. Nouwen proceeds to develop his approach to ministry with an analysis of sufferings — a suffering world, a suffering generation, a suffering person, and a suffering minister. It is his contention that ministers are called to recognize the sufferings of their time in their own hearts and make that recognition the starting point of their service. For Nouwen, ministers must be willing to go beyond their professional role and leave themselves open as fellow human beings with the same wounds and suffering — in the image of Christ. In other words, we heal from our own wounds. Filled with examples from everyday experience, The Wounded Healer is a thoughtful and insightful guide that will be welcomed by anyone engaged in the service of others.

  • Problem Of War In The Old Testament A Print On Demand Title

    $18.99

The predominance of war in the Old Testament troubles many Christians. However, it is an issue that must be faced, says Peter Craigie, because it has serious ramifications for contemporary Christian attitudes about war.

Craigie categorizes the problems into two kinds – personal and external. The personal problems arise from the Christian’s attempt to grapple with the emphasis on war in a book fundamental to the faith. Three areas are considered here: the representation of God as a Warrior; God’s revelation of himself in a book that preserves an extensive amount of war literature; and the seemingly conflicting ethics taught in the Old and New Testament.

The external problems are critiques against the Bible and the Christian faith, based on the war-like nature of the Old Testament and the close association between Christianity and war throughout history. Only by examining and understanding the problems of war in the Old Testament will Christians be able to respond intelligently to attacks on their faith, to educate their youth about the nature of war, and to influence modern attitudes toward war.

  • Prophet Against Prophet A Print On Demand Title

    $23.99

Throughout the history of the Israelite kingdoms there were prophets who prophesied nothing but favorable consequences for the actions of their political leaders. Opposing them were prophets who drew a distinction between the will of Yahweh for his people and the opportunistic aims of the monarchs. In the Micaiah narratives of 1 Kings 22 are seen two early stages in the development of this ideological conflict. Simon John De Vries examines thoroughly these early stages in order to find and understand the root causes of the conflict that led finally to national ruin.

De Vries approaches the material with a comprehensive methodology that applies textual criticism, literary and form criticism, and tradition history or redaction criticism. Another distinctive feature of the study is that it categorizes all the prophet legends in the Former Prophets collection according to subgenres, thereby more clearly seeing the place and function of 1 Kings 22 in its context.

But all too often the opportunity isn’t there. We neglect the young Christian in our whirl of programs, church services, and fellowship groups. And we neglect to raise up workers and leaders who can disciple young believers into mature and fruitful Christians. In simple. practical, and biblical terms, LeRoy Eims revives the lost art of disciple making. He explains:
    * How the early church discipled new Christians
    * How to meet the basic needs of a growing Christian
    * How to spot and train potential workers
    * How to develop mature, godly leaders

“True growth takes time and tears and love and patience,” Eims states. There is no instant maturity. This book examines the growth process in the life of a Christian and considers what nurture and guidance it takes to develop spiritually qualified workers in the church.

  • Last Things A Print On Demand Title

    $17.99

Scriptural prophecies about the end times have been the subject of a great number of books. Many of them, however, are popularized accounts containing little thoughtful biblical scholarship. Yet the serious studies available are often too difficult for the average reader to understand. George Eldon Ladd has endeavored to rectify this situation with a serious discussion of eschatology written for the layperson.

Two radically different interpretations of the relationship between the prophecies of the Old and New Testaments have been offered. One view sees separate programs for Israel and the Christian church, while the other recognizes progressive revelation and a unity of the Testaments.

Professor Ladd holds the latter position, basing his doctrine of the last things on the conviction that “our final word . . . is to be found in the New Testament reinterpretation of Old Testament prophecy.” Only as the prophecies are seen in the light of God’s revelation through Christ can we clearly comprehend what they mean in relation to the end times.

  • Minister As Diagnostician

    $24.00

Persons with personal problems often turn to their ministers for help. What kind of help do they hope to get that, rightly or wrongly, they do not expect from other professionals (psychiatrists, counselors, psychologists, or social workers)? The answer this book gives is that they want to be addressed in the terms and symbols of their faith, by authoritative standard-bearers of their faith.

The minister has the responsibility–and ability–to meet this particular need, says Dr. Prayser. Here he answers such questions as: How should ministers proceed to help? On what grounds should they make or receive referrals? What do they think troubled counselees want from them? What kind of personal knowledge and skill should they have in order to help? Are pastoral views and pastoral interventions unique?

Dr. Pruyser explores, in depth, the first step in the helping process: the diagnostic assessment of the problem-laden person. The diagnoses that the minister makes cannot be medical or psychiatric, says Dr. Pruyser. Rather they must be derived from the ministers own theological thought and a particular kind of awareness on the part of the counselee He develops a set of guidelines for conducting pastoral-diagnostic interviews that both acknowledges the pastors professional uniqueness and meets the parishoners expectations.

  • Real Satan : From Biblical Times To The Present

    $18.00

James Kallas presents the real Satan by examining who Satan is in both Old and New Testaments.

Many will want to scoff at the idea that Satan exists at all, precisely because their image of Satan is relegated to the ways in which he is depicted, particularly in the New Testament. There, Satan’s presence caused people to be blind, deaf, lame, as well as to foam at the mouth, scream out obscenities, and roll in the fire.

Others will take Satan’s power too seriously by making too much of his power, as if Satan is even more powerful than Jesus Christ.

James Kallas presents a balanced study of the ways in which Satan is manifest in such contemporary places and activities as drug and alcohol abuse, atheism, and in satanic worship.

The Real Satan uniquely and seriously addresses Satan’s presence and power, yet with even more seriousness this book points to the assurance that Jesus Christ is victorious over Satan and all evil powers.

The charismatic movement, with its emphasis on Spirit baptism and the manifestation gifts of the Spirit, become one of the most prominent features of twentieth-century Christianity.

Dr. Unger traces the doctrine of the baptism of the Spirit through the New Testament. In the final two chapters he puts the doctrine into its proper place with respect to spiritual gifts and the experiences of the Holy Sprit’s power for Christian living.

Since a great danger of the charismatic movement lies in its understanding of the nature of Christian maturity, Dr. Unger points out that true maturity is achieved only in day-by-day obedience, Bible study, and prayer.

    Practicing the Presence of God

If you wish to know your Lord in a deeper way, you are invited to join the vast host of Christians who, over three centuries, have turned to this book more than any other–except the Scriptures–in order to begin that journey to the depths of Christ.

Imagine a book that is 300 years old and has never been out of print! Such is the book you hold in your hands. Other than Pilgrim’s Progress, there is probably no other piece of Christian literature that has stood the test of the centuries so well. An estimated 22 million copies of the original The Practice of the Presence of God have been printed in the English language alone. In recent years, however, interest in this book has waned as the original English edition became so outdated that it was virtually unreadable. The publishers have now revised and reissued this book under the title Practicing His Presence and the profundity, depth, and beauty of Brother Lawrence’s masterpiece lives again!

We have included in this edition, not only the letters of Brother Lawrence–from the 17th century–but also those of Frank Laubach–from the 20th century–who, like Brother Lawrence before him, wrote a series of letters chronicling his experiences in practicing the presence of Jesus Christ.

  • Satan Is Alive And Well On Planet Earth

    $15.99

No one thinks much about the Devil anymore. In fact, words like witchcraft and black magic have a strangely medieval ring to our ears. Many people even think of Satan as somehow comic — and therefore harmless. Yet amidst the tragedy and corruption of our own century, it is ironic that many people doubt whether an active, evil force really exists. But Satan is not dead, says author Hal Lindsey; he has simply adopted a more modern style. Spiritualism, astrology, “new age” religion — all of these and more are signs of the creeping influence of the Father of Lies in our time. In this book, Hal Lindsey, well-known speaker and author of the best-selling Late Great Planet Earth, outlines a battle plan for overcoming this very real and insidious enemy. The times may change, but the conflict is as old as the Garden of Eden. Whatever happened to old What’s-his-name?

  • Apocalyptic A Print On Demand Title

    $17.99

The study of apocalyptic – the body of ancient literature dealing with the end of the world – is vital to an understanding of the New Testament. Most of us, however, know very little about the subject – and if Leon Morris is correct, much of what we think we know is wrong.

In this brief introduction to apocalyptic, Morris brings together the results of a great deal of work that has been done on the subject by himself and others. In a clear and lucid style, he addresses himself to the characteristics of apocalyptic writings, the world from which they arose, and their relation to the gospel. “Apocalyptic is not a good medium for expressing the cruciality of the cross,” Morris concludes, “and in fact it does not express it . . . We cannot understand important sections of the New Testament without some knowledge of apocalyptic. But we cannot hold that apocalyptic contains the key to the whole. . . .”

  • Where God Meets Man

    $19.00

This book about Luther’s theology is written out of a two-fold conviction- first, that many of our problems have arisen because we have not really understood our own traditions, especially in the case of Luther; and second, that there is still a lot of help for us in someone like Luther if we take the trouble to probe beneath the surface. It is an attempt to interpret Luther’s theology for our own day.

  • Protestant Faith

    $25.00

This new edition of a standard text describes lucidly and comprehensively the “classical Protestant faith” with the help of illustrations drawn from contemproary life. It does not assume previous knowledge yet does not avoid the more complex issues in Christian theology, such as theories of the atonement or the doctrine of the trinity. In eight chapters the author explains, against many current misunderstandings, what Christians mean by faith. He deA scribes the nature of revelation and the God who has revealed himself – and what this means for an understanding of the world and the human condition in this world. This is fol lowed by an explanation of the doctrine of Christ, his human ity and divinity, and his work on behalf of the human race. Professor Forell concludes with an explanation of the work of the Holy Spirit through the church by means of word and sac rament and details the Christian hope for the coming kingdom of God. [The Protestant Faith] has a valuable appendix which makes available the universal Christian creeds and confes sional statements, and adds to its appeal as atext and ref erence manual.

  • Form Criticism Of The Old Testament

    $19.00

Because of its long oral tradition the Old Testament includes an array of different literary types and compositions. Analysis of these genres in the biblical material is known as form criticism. Gene Tucker draws on contemporary speech patterns to illustrate how the scholar pinpoints various categories or genres. The basic principles of form criticism are outlined and many biblical examples given. The story of Jacob’s struggle at the Jabbok and the prophetic literature are treated in detail. While form criticism does not solve all the interpreter’s problems, it forms an essential tool for exegesis and for recovering the living history of Old Testament literature.

  • I And Thou

    $17.00

Today considered a landmark of twentieth-century intellectual history, I and Thou is also one of the most important books of Western theology. In it, Martin Buber, heavily influenced by the writings of Frederich Nietzsche, united the proto-Existentialists currents of modern German thought with the Judeo-Christian tradition, powerfully updating faith for modern times. Since its first appearance in German in 1923, this slender volume has become one of the epoch-making works of our time. Not only does it present the best thinking of one of the greatest Jewish minds in centuries, but has helped to mold approaches to reconciling God with the workings of the modern world and the consciousness of its inhabitants.

This work is the centerpiece of Buber’s groundbreaking philosophy. It lays out a view of the world in which human beings can enter into relationships using their innermost and whole being to form true partnerships. These deep forms of rapport contrast with those that spring from the Industrial Revolution, namely the common, but basically unethical, treatment of others as objects for our use and the incorrect view of the universe as merely the object of our senses, experiences. Buber goes on to demonstrate how these interhuman meetings are a reflection of the human meeting with God. For Buber, the essence of biblical religion consists in the fact that — regardless of the infinite abyss between them — a dialogue between man and God is possible.

Ecumenical in its appeal, I and Thou nevertheless reflects the profound Talmudic tradition from which it has emerged. For Judaism, Buber’s writings have been of revolutionary importance. No other writer has so shaken Judaism from parochialism and applied it so relevantly to the problems and concerns of contemporary men. On the other hand, the fundamentalist Protestant movement in this country has appropriated Buber’s “I and Thou encounter” as the implicit basis of its doctrine of immediate faith-based salvation. In this light, Martin Buber has been viewed as the Jewish counterpart to Paul Tillich.

This is the original English translation, available in America only in this hardcover edition of I and Thou. Martin Buber considered Ronald Smith’s the best of the English translations and it was prepared in the author’s presence. The more poetic rendering, this translation can be looked at as the King James Version of Buber’s I and Thou.

  • Late Great Planet Earth

    $17.99

The impact of The Late Great Planet Earth cannot be overstated. The New York Times called it the “no. 1 non-fiction bestseller of the decade.” For Christians and non-Christians of the 1970s, Hal Lindsey’s blockbuster served as a wake-up call on events soon to come and events already unfolding — all leading up to the greatest event of all: the return of Jesus Christ. The years since have confirmed Lindsey’s insights into what biblical prophecy says about the times we live in. Whether you’re a church-going believer or someone who wouldn’t darken the door of a Christian institution, the Bible has much to tell you about the imminent future of this planet. In the midst of an out-of-control generation, it reveals a grand design that’s unfolding exactly according to plan. The rebirth of Israel. The threat of war in the Middle East. An increase in natural catastrophes. The revival of Satanism and witchcraft. These and other signs, foreseen by prophets from Moses to Jesus, portend the coming of an antichrist . . . of a war which will bring humanity to the brink of destruction . . . and of incredible deliverance for a desperate, dying planet

  • Pattern Of New Testament Truth A Print On Demand Title

    $19.99

George Eldon Ladd here addresses the problem of differences and similarities in the theologies of the New Testament writers, and seeks to show in this examination what he calls “the pattern of New Testament truth.”

The author argues against an overemphasis on Gnosticism in the study of the background of the New Testament. Ladd then goes on to consider a philosophical movement, prevalent during the first century, about which much more is known – Greek dualism, especially as expressed by Plato, Plutarch, and Philo. He points out the differences between Greek and New Testament thought, and goes on to contrast the Greek view of reality with that of the Hebrews, which he concludes to be essentially that of the New Testament. / The unity of the New Testament, Ladd believes, is to be found in the Heilgeschichte, the record of the historical dealings of God with man. The diversity between the Synoptics (Mathew, Mark, and Luke), John, and Paul is a result of different perspectives from which this redemptive event of God is interpreted. A chapter is devoted to each of these viewpoints, giving a detailed analysis of the unity and diversity that manifests itself, and demonstrating that differences are a matter of separate strata or levels of theology rather than of conflicting suppositions.

  • Jeremiah And Lamentations Everymans Bible Commentary

    $11.99

Jeremiah, previously published as a separate volume, has been combined with Lamentations to provide a carefully organized exposition that reconstructs the historical and cultural backgrounds as well as the vital message of the two Old Testament books.

Jeremiah is a penetrating analysis of a significant prophetic book regarded as especially relevant to modern times. Lamentations is an appropriate sequel to this book, for it looks back to the event that Jeremiah anticipated, the fall of Jerusalem.

Using a paragraph-by-paragraph method of analysis, Dr. Jensen explores major units of thought in these biblical books. He effectively uses charts, maps, and informative footnotes to aid the reader’s understanding.
